New Art WM Annuale is a new project which showcases artists living and working in the West Midlands and encourages people to become buyers of contemporary art. While the UK’s art market thrives in the capital it isn’t as obvious in some of the regions.
Several past initiatives in the West Midlands have proved popular but the irregularity of selling exhibitions and art fairs in the region, alongside the lack of contemporary selling galleries, prohibits the continued sale of works to the public.
For this project 14 artists have been chosen. Co-Curator Mona Casey, Director of Article Gallery comments:
“We visited artists’ studios across the West Midlands before settling on the 14 artists who will exhibit in the Annuale. The mix of artworks on show reflect distinctive trends in contemporary art right now – we are seeing new ways of portraying landscape, both real and imagined, urban and rural, but also we will show art that looks at global issues such as identity, religion and gender.”
The artist’s work spans paintings, sculpture, drawing, photography, video and digital with artworks on sale from £90 to £3500.
Artists on show include Liz Rowe, currently artist in residence at New Art Gallery Walsall, and Rafal Zar, who won New Art West Midlands in 2013. Yvonne Hindle will present brightly coloured abstract paintings and photographer Vanley Burke will show prints from his classic series capturing life in urban Birmingham.
Other artists showing their work include Graham Chorlton, Lucy Hutchinson, Corey Hayman and Matt Westbrook.
The Annuale is curated by Rachel Bradley, Head of Art Market at New Art WM. She explained the idea behind the exhibition:
“The Annuale will allow anyone who is interested in contemporary art to see exciting new work that is being created here in the West Midlands. As all the work is on sale, it’s a great chance for anyone interested in buying art to connect with artists, talk to us about the work and start to build a collection of their own.”
