Nadelman took a series of portraits and pictures of the clientele that frequented his bar near the port authority in New York; the Terminal Bar. The images were shot over a period of ten years from 1972-1982 and have resulted in a kind of accidental anthropology on Nadelman’s part.

The portraits (over 800) feature Irish longshoremen, pimps, policemen, drag queens, queers and lost souls. I think it is a rare collection of work that really paints a picture of a New York, which has all but vanished courtesy of Mayor Giulliani, and the increased geographical and psychological territory of Manhattan.

TROVE is based at the The Old Science Museum in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
