International Dance Festival Birmingham is a major biennial festival produced by DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome. Hosting an array of dance styles from ballet to breaks this year you can also catch dance-inspired films and even a Drum ’n’ Bass star taking centre stage. Wolverhampton’s very own Goldie will star in this outdoor adaptation of Wim Wenders’ cult 1987 Bafta-nominated film Wings of Desire.
The spectacle will unfold before your eyes and promises to feature the most amazing transformation of a Birmingham building ever seen. Complete with jaw-dropping circus acrobatics, exhilarating dance and stunning architectural mapping, illuminating and animating the beautifully-restored architecture of the Town Hall.
Goldie will play the part originally played in the film by Peter Falk – a fallen angel who will interact with performing angels on the tops of buildings around the Square. The whole Square will become the stage, and the audience will watch the performance unravel around them. Australian circus company Circa will perform, along with Hereford’s 2Faced Dance Company.
Angels gather on rooftops as the whole of Victoria Square comes alive with jaw-dropping circus acrobatics and exhilarating dance. Music resounds and surprises come from all corners as the intensity builds to the ultimate finale moment – a sequence of glorious technicolour projections, bathing the beautifully-restored Town Hall in magical moving imagery.
